5 Industries That Rely on Agitator Tanks in Australia

Here are five Australian industries where agitator tanks are essential – and what they’re used for in each.

Agitator tanks are one of those pieces of industrial equipment that appear across a surprisingly wide range of sectors – from the oilfield to the mine site to the water treatment facility. the underlying requirement is always the same: keep fluid mixed, keep solids suspended, and keep the process running. But specific demands, fluid types and operating environments vary enormously.

1. Oil and Gas Drilling

This is the highest-profile application in Australia’s resources sector. Drilling mud – engineered fluid used to maintain well-bore pressure, cool the drill bit and carry cuttings to surface – must be kept in continuous suspension to perform correctly. Agitator tanks in active mud systems ensure that weighting agents, solids, and chemical additives remain uniformly distributed throughout the fluid volume at all times.

Without agitation, solids settle rapidly, mud density becomes inconsistent, and the well-bore pressure balance that the drilling program depends on is compromised. On a drilling rig, an agitator failure in the mud system is a serious operational event.

Agitator mixing tanks are also used for preparing new mud batches, blending chemical additions, and holding reserve fluid for large drilling campaigns.

2. Mining and Mineral Processing

In mining and mineral processing, agitator tanks are used across a range of applications in slurry circuits, leach processes, and reagent preparation.

In heap leach and agitation leach operations, tanks agitate the ore slurry to improve contact between the leaching solution and the ore particles – directly affecting metal recovery. In reagent preparation, agitator tanks ensure that chemicals are fully dissolved and uniformly distributed before they’re dosed into the circuit.

Slurry holding and transfer tanks also require agitation to prevent settling, which can cause blockages in downstream pipelines and equipment.

3. Produced Water and Wastewater Treatment

Produced water – the water that comes up with oil and gas from producing well – requires treatment before disposal or re-injection. Agitator tanks play a role at several stages: mixing treatment chemicals into the produced water stream, maintaining suspension of solids during settling or flotation stages, and conditioning water before further processing.

In industrial wastewater treatment, agitator tanks are used for flash mixing of coagulants and flocculants, equalization of variable-strength effluent streams, and maintaining biological activity in treatment vessels.

4. Chemcial and Petrochemcial Processing

Chemical plants and petrochemical facilities use agitator tanks throughout their processes – blending raw materials, preparing intermediates, maintaining reaction condition, and storing products that must be kept mixed to prevent separation or settling.

In these environments, agitator design is particularly critical. Fluid properties – viscosity, density, reactivity, and temperature – vary widely, and the agitator must be matched to specific process requirement. Explosion-proof motors and ATEX or IECEx certified electrical components are often required where flammable vapours may be present.

5. Industrial and Environmental Services

Environmental service operators – conducting soil remediation, contaminated site cleanup, or industrial waste treatment – regularly need agitator tanks for temporary fluid management tasks. Mixing treatment chemicals into contaminated water, maintaining suspension of disturbed sediments, and preparing slurries for disposal or treatment are all common applications.

In decommissioning and well abandoned projects – a significant and growing sector in Western Australia – agitator tanks are used to mix cement slurries, spacer fluids, and other well kill fluids required during plug and abandonment operations.

The Common Thread

Across all of these industries, the fundamental requirement is the same: a fluid that s not properly agitated becomes a problem. Settled solids block pipes, compromise process chemistry, create inconsistent pump inputs and undermine the reliability of the system they’re part of.

An agitator tank rental gives you access to the right mixing solution, in the right size and specification, for as long as the project demands- without the capital cost and ownership burden of buying your own equipment.
